What makes a photo "biometric"?
A biometric photo is specifically designed for machine-readable identification. Unlike a casual portrait, it follows strict rules about facial proportions, head position, expression, and background so that facial recognition algorithms can accurately match it against databases.
Key requirements that distinguish biometric photos:
- Face occupies 70–80% of the frame height
- Eyes are at a specific height in the image (typically one-third from the top)
- Neutral expression with mouth closed
- Both ears visible
- Uniform, light-coloured background
- No accessories obscuring the face
Biometric photo vs regular photo
| Feature | Biometric photo | Regular photo |
|---|---|---|
| Expression | Neutral only | Any expression |
| Background | White/light grey, uniform | Any background |
| Head position | Straight, front-facing | Any angle |
| Accessories | No glasses, hats, scarves | Allowed |
| Editing | Minimal — no filters | Editing allowed |
| Purpose | Machine recognition | Personal use |
Where are biometric photos required?
- Passports — nearly all countries now require biometric-standard photos
- National ID cards — Aadhaar (India), Social Security (US), etc.
- Visa applications — both tourist and work visas
- Driving licences — in countries with digital ID systems
- Government exam forms — SSC, UPSC, IBPS, NEET, etc.
