How to Remove Background from Any Photo

Whether you need a transparent PNG for a design project or a clean headshot for LinkedIn, removing backgrounds has never been easier with browser-based tools.

Why remove image backgrounds?

Background removal is one of the most common image editing tasks. Here are the top use cases:

  • E-commerce product photos: Clean white backgrounds make products look professional on Amazon, Shopify, and other platforms.
  • Professional headshots: Remove distracting backgrounds from LinkedIn photos and resume portraits.
  • Design and marketing: Isolate subjects for flyers, social media posts, and presentations.
  • Passport and ID photos: Many applications require a plain white or solid-color background.

How our flood-fill algorithm works

Unlike simple color replacement tools that change every pixel of a similar color (which can eat into your subject), our tool uses a flood-fill algorithm. Here's the difference:

  • Simple color replacement: Removes all pixels that match the selected color, even if they're inside the subject (like skin, clothing, etc.). Produces poor results on complex photos.
  • Flood-fill (our approach): Starts from where you click and spreads outward through connected pixels of similar color. If the same color exists inside the subject but isn't connected to the background, it's safely preserved.

We also seed the algorithm from all four image edges, so it automatically detects background regions that extend to the borders. The result is much more accurate subject preservation.

Step-by-step: Remove background with PhotoResizer.in

  1. Upload your image. Drag and drop or click to browse. We accept JPG, PNG, and WebP up to 25MB.
  2. Click on the background. Click anywhere on the background area. The tool will sample that color as the starting point.
  3. Adjust tolerance if needed. For backgrounds with slight color variations (like shadows on a white wall), increase the tolerance. For precise edges, decrease it.
  4. Click "Remove Background." The algorithm processes the image locally in your browser. No upload to any server.
  5. Download the transparent PNG. The result preserves your subject with smooth, anti-aliased edges.

Tips for best results

  • High contrast helps: A light subject on a dark background (or vice versa) produces the cleanest cuts.
  • Solid backgrounds are easiest: Plain white, green, or blue backgrounds give the best results. Busy patterns are harder.
  • Good lighting matters: Even lighting reduces shadows that can confuse the edge detection.
  • Try different seed points: If the first click doesn't capture all the background, try clicking in a different area and adjusting tolerance.

Background removal vs background replacement

Removing the background gives you a transparent PNG — perfect for placing the subject on any new background in design tools. If you need a specific solid color (like white for passport photos or blue for visa photos), use our Background Color Changer instead. It uses the same algorithm but replaces the background with your chosen color instead of transparency.
