Passport Photo Size Requirements for Online Applications

Digital passport photos look simple but sit at the intersection of photography, printing standards and government regulations. Here's everything you need to know to get it right on the first try.

Typical digital passport photo dimensions

While printed passport photos are often described in millimetres (for example 35 × 45 mm), digital uploads focus on pixels. Portals usually ask for a square or near-square image with enough resolution that your face remains detailed when zoomed in.

Portal styleCommon dimensionsNotes
Square digital upload600 × 600 pxFrequently used by online systems that crop or position the photo automatically.
Traditional 35 × 45 mmAt least 827 × 1181 pxRough pixel equivalent when scanning or exporting from a camera or phone.
High-resolution guidance900 × 1200 px or higherGives more detail; file size must still sit inside the portal's upper limit.

File size and format limits

Every online portal sets a minimum and maximum file size to balance clarity with server load. If your picture is too small, automated checks may reject it; if it is too large, the upload button simply fails.

  • Format: JPEG/JPG is accepted almost everywhere. Some systems also accept PNG, but very few allow TIFF or HEIC.
  • File size: Many portals accept anything between 20KB and 350KB. A practical target for most users is around 100–200KB.
  • Colour: Full-colour sRGB is standard. Avoid black-and-white or heavily filtered photos.

Background, lighting and expression

Even a perfectly sized file will be rejected if the subject is not clear. Most authorities repeat the same three themes:

  • Background: Plain white or very light grey works almost everywhere. Avoid busy patterns, dark walls and strong gradients.
  • Lighting: Soft, even lighting is best. Stand facing a window, avoid harsh ceiling lights and remove harsh shadows behind you.
  • Expression: Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open and looking towards the camera. No strong smiles or exaggerated poses.

Using PhotoResizer.in to prepare your passport photo

  1. Crop the image. Make sure your head and shoulders are centred with a small space above the head.
  2. Open the online image resizer. Use the main tool on PhotoResizer.in to upload your photo securely.
  3. Adjust dimensions. Set a target width and height that match your portal's advice, such as 600 × 600 px.
  4. Choose a sensible KB target. Start with 150–200KB unless your portal specifies a smaller maximum.
  5. Download and test. Save the result and upload it to your portal to confirm it's accepted.

Privacy and security considerations

A passport photo is sensitive identification. PhotoResizer.in is built with a privacy-first mindset — images are processed locally in your browser and are never uploaded to our servers. For your own safety, you should still:

  • Use personal devices or trusted networks wherever possible.
  • Delete temporary files from shared computers once you are done.
  • Keep your final passport photo in a secure folder with limited access.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Uploading screenshots of photos instead of the original image, which often reduces quality too much.
  • Using heavy beauty filters or colour edits that no longer match your real appearance.
  • Ignoring pixel dimensions and focusing only on file size, which may result in a very small or stretched image.
