The core rule: Face must be fully visible
The fundamental requirement across all countries is that your entire face — from hairline to chin, and both ears — must be clearly visible. Your hairstyle should not cover, obscure, or cast shadows on any part of your face.
What's allowed
- Hair pulled back: Ponytails, buns, braids behind the head.
- Short hairstyles: Any length that doesn't cover the face.
- Natural hair: Afros, curls, locs — as long as the face is fully visible.
- Hair accessories: Small clips that don't cover the face or forehead.
What's not allowed
- Hair covering eyes or eyebrows: Bangs/fringe that falls over the eyes must be pinned back.
- Hair covering ears: Some countries (Japan, Korea) require both ears visible.
- Headbands that cover the forehead: Visible forehead is required.
- Wigs that dramatically change appearance: Your photo should match your daily appearance.
Religious and cultural headcoverings
Most countries allow religious headcoverings (hijab, turban, yarmulke, etc.) as long as:
- The full face from hairline (or forehead for headcoverings) to chin is visible.
- No shadows are cast on the face by the headcovering.
- The headcovering doesn't cover the ears (some countries exempt this for religious reasons).
